The chapel of the Virgin Mary at Dinious is a significant monument and there you can see the miraculous religious painting of the Virgin Mary.

The painting, which has the inscription “Holy Lady the merciful”, is believed to have been painted in the “hagiography” style during the 11th century and may have been enriched over its original painting in the 14th or 16th century, the facts are not quite clear.

The church itself is found on private land near the area of “Kefales” and is of rich archeological importance. As well tradition states the existence of miracles and even of the appearance of the Virgin Mary. The church honors the “Resting” of the Holy Lady on the 23rd of August, and masses gather on this day to pay tribute in a fair on the grounds. The tributes are witness to the miraculous status of this painting of the Virgin Mary.

The origin of its name has two versions:
The first states that a Turkish soldier during the Ottoman reign shot at the picture in an attempt to kill a Greek fugitive who retreated and hid behind it. According to history, the icon of the Virgin Mary “returned” the bullet and killed the soldier. This can be considered accurate as we witness a bullet mark on the face of the Holy Lady, near the forehead. Thus the name was given as “Dinious” from the Turkish word “donus” which means “return” (the Holy Lady of Return).
This is a significant monument in the area of North Evia, but for the whole of the island of Evia, it’s worth visiting and it attracts tourists from all over Greece who come during their summer holidays.
The other version, which isn’t as strong is that the name stems from the streams that exist around the church called by the locals “diniorema”, and therefore has given the name to the church due o these.
