The Museum at the "Drosini" Tower

SC00260In the village of Gouves, we can find the well known Tower of Gouves, which later became the property of the famous Greek poet Georgios Drosini. The property is dated back to the beginning of the 1800’s and was built by the turkish lord Ibraem. The architectural design was by a slave named Ahmet and it is said that in exchange he was granted his freedom. As the story goes, the workers were paid with cabbage and the lord very harsh and addicted to alcohol.

As a result of all this, a legend came to pass that the lord Ibraem butchered an Arab servant after many cruel tortures. Even more, the blood of the Arab servant stained the walls of the tower for years after the murder. After the lord, the tower was owned by the poet’s grandfather in 1831 (after the Greek Revolution), and was where the poet was raised.
Today, the tower belongs to the municipality of Istiaia-Aidipsos county and is now a museum with an interesting folkloric collection.
