nisiotisa 07Just outside of the village of Neos Pyrgos we find a beautiful natural beach called Nisiotissa. Only a few meters away from the coastline is the tiny island (islet) with ruins on the higher grounds. These are ruins of a church from the Frankish rule as well as a tower built during the Ottoman Rule.

A grave has even been found here dated back to the Middle Ages and seems to be connected with an important historical event, according to a document by the ecclesiastic Sylvester from the Byzantine period, having arrived in Oreoi after taking part in the Ferrara Florentine session that took place in 1438-1439.
History states that when Constantinople was in such that grave dangers that even the Ottomans challenged its existence, the Byzantines looked for allies. This situation led the emperor John Paleologos on the verge of “buying the aid” by joining the two churches. This was he reason for the session at Ferrara in Florence.
